Pendle Hill is a great walk whether you set off from the Nick ‘o’ Pendle, Barley, the Big End or Pendleton. But what if you wanted something shorter or less arduous? Great Hameldon on the opposite side of the Calder valley gives such a lot for relatively little effort.
It’s so good to get out in the fresh air, hear the larks and enjoy the sweeping views. From the top Great Hameldon the views are panoramic with the large mass of Pendle Hill centre stage facing north with the Bowland Hills and Yorkshire Dales behind. On a good day, the sea at Blackpool forms a bright silver line in the west with the tower just poking up on the horizon. Looking eastwards you see the interesting array of masts on Hameldon Hill, Great Hameldon’s little brother.
This is a great short walk easily accessed off the A56 Accrington bypass at a number of places.
