New excavations at Star Carr
Three Friends of Pendle Heritage attended a fascinating lecture hosted by Middleton Archaeology Society, near Manchester. It was given by Dr. Chantal Conneller who is Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Manchester but also expert in flint technology and refitting co-director at Starr Carr, the Mesolithic archaeological site near Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Eclipse over Blackburn
The event of the week was the eclipse. Here is a set of eighteen photos viewed from Blackburn. The weather was cloudy with the eclipse just appearing now and then, when the cloud got a little thinner. It actually made the photos easier to take and more interesting. Spring Gardening – March
Five members of the Heritage Gardens Group got stuck into some practical work yesterday (18th March) with some bed tidying in the walled garden and some woodland maintenance. We also started work on plant labelling and a leaflet identifying where the historic plants are located.
We planned a programme of practical sessions on Wednesdays starting at 11am through to 4pm, with lunch in between and changed the starting time of the next two meetings to match. The programme so far can be found HERE. Continue reading “Spring Gardening – March”

Genetic study answers centuries-old questions
A fascinating new study published in Nature has answered some centuries-old questions of history such as ‘were the Celts ever a single people?’ or ‘did the Saxons wipe out the native British?’.

Now there’ a title of a talk which arouses the curiosity in all of us.
Anne Eves gave us a talk on plants and gardens which she finds inspires her the ‘would be gardener’ to successfully create her perfect garden’. Anne drew her inspiration from many sources including gardens from all around the uk. Plants themselves inspired Anne, from the early in the season Snowdrops through to the autumn tints and winter.
